Medicinal Marijuana Can Be Used in the Treatment of HCC

We have watched with growing encouragement over the last few years as study after study has highlighted the positive impact that certain marijuana strains can offer to treat many conditions and diseases. Central to some of these studies has been marijuana’s potential therapeutic benefit for some types ofcancer. Some of these cancers include:

  • Bladder cancer
  • Glioma
  • Leukemia
  • Breast cancer

And now, research coming out of China (more specifically the Guangzhou Medical University) suggests that cannabis can be used in the treatment of a deadly form of liver cancer called HCC (Hepatocellular Carcinoma).

In this research, the team placed a target on affected liver cells and subjected these cells to a cannabis containing substance, and it was found in the resultant testing phase that the substance managed to halt the growth of the cancer cells and prevent them spreading to new cells. It was found in the follow up study that the cannabinoid receptor agonists could interrupt and derail the cell cycle regulation, which allowed the Chinese researchers to assume that these cannabinoids could be used in the treatment of this deadly type of liver cancer.

The head researcher said that “Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the number one cause of cancer deaths in the world, and there so few therapeutic treatments available to combat HCC”.

Other research teams have been cautious to accept the results, because they suggest that tests still need to be done on whether the phytocannabinoids which come from the cannabis plant can produce the same effect.

But, this Chinese study is encouraging for the millions of HCC sufferers worldwide, and further adds weight to the benefits cannabis can provide in the treatment of various cancers. The study has received praise from the US, with the National Cancer Institute welcoming the findings and has urged more research to be completed to propel the treatment forward so it can become a recognized treatment for HCC sufferers.

The National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA) has suggested in the past that cannabis can be used as a treatment method for destroying certain types of cannabis cells, as well as decreasing the size of tumors. This is the same NIDA which has long said that there is no positive use for cannabis, so it is encouraging to see a federal research organization such as the NIDA coming out in support of cannabis as a possible treatment method for some types of cancer.
